There is nothing like a good night’s sleep…especially if you’re a parent. I know that if I don’t get enough or good quality sleep my whole family ends up paying the price. Either I’m impatient, lack energy, or can’t focus. There are a few oils that I absolutely love to use before bed to help me relax and settle in for a good night’s sleep. One thing I’ve learned since using essential oils is that not everyone is created equal. For example, some people have amazing results with Lavender and others it makes them more awake and alert. My daughter is one of those people. The best oil for her to use is Bergamot. For some reason it is the one that gives her the most peace and comfort at the end of the day. 

There are a couple different ways that you can use oils to help promote a good night’s sleep. Sometimes you have to play around with them to find the oil(s) and the method(s) that work best for you! As I mentioned, essential oils aren’t a one size fits all solution.

HOW TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SLEEP

  • Topically – You can apply the oil, diluted topically on your feet, wrist, or neck. The feet is a common place to apply oils topically as it helps to absorb into our system in an efficient way. On the wrist and neck it helps you get the aroma of the oils which can be very soothing.
  • aromaticAromatically – I love using oils in a diffuser as it helps everyone in the room and it’s so easy to enjoy the aroma. Using a diffuser with a time setting on it can also help to disperse the oils throughout the night in small doses so you’re able to stay asleep.
  • Linens – Another way that you can use the oils is to combine them with water and lightly mist your linens before bed or you can also do a small drop on your pillowcase. You’ll want to be safe with the resinous oils as they can leave a mark so be sure to know what ones you’re using and how to use them safely.

  1. lavender essential oilLavender Essential Oil – Lavender has been used and cherished for centuries for its unmistakable aroma and myriad benefits. It is widely used for its calming and relaxing qualities which continue to be Lavender’s most notable qualities. Add to bath water before bed to soak away stress or add a few drops of Lavender to pillows, bedding, or bottoms of feet to promote a restful night’s sleep.

     

  2. Cedarwood Essential Oil – Known for its rich hue and warm, woody scent, Cedarwood essential oil provides a myriad of health benefits that date back to biblical times. Cedarwood has a grounding aroma that evokes feelings of wellness and vitality. Additionally, Cedarwood is frequently used in massage therapy to relax and soothe the mind and body. This is my favorite one to use topically on my wrists before bed.

     

  3. Vetiver Essential Oil – Due to Vetiver’s calming, grounding effect on the emotions, and its ability to promote circulation, Vetiver is an ideal oil to use in massage therapy. It can also be rubbed on the feet before bedtime to promote a restful night’s sleep. 

     

  4. Bergamot Essential Oil –  Italians have used Bergamot for years to reduce tension and stress. Bergamot is unique among citrus oils due to its ability to be both uplifting and calming, making it ideal to help with anxious and sad feelings. My daughter uses this in her diffuser before bed and also when she’s feeling anxious during the day.

     

  5. Roman Chamomile Essential Oil – Roman Chamomile has a calming effect on the skin, mind, and body. It’s a great oil to use in the bath, topically on the feet, or in a diffuser to help promote relaxation before bed.
