What is Lurking In Your Personal Care Products?

formaldehyde-is-in-your-baby-products

In the fall of 2011 healthcare giant, Johnson & Johnson (who is the maker of products such as Clean & Clear, Neutrogena, Aveeno, Lubriderm, Bengay, Neosporin, Lysterine, Tylenol, Montrin, Visine, and a huge line of baby products), announced that they were going to be discontinuing the use of two harmful chemicals from its baby products. The two ingredients in question are 1,4-dioxane, considered a likely carcinogen, and quaternium-15, a chemical that releases the preservative formaldehyde.

When I was a young Mom I only used Aveeno on my babies, thinking I was making a safer, healthier choice for them. It is so frustrating to look back and realize that what I thought was safe…wasn’t! It is no wonder that disease is running rampant across our nation. There are toxic ingredients in almost EVERYTHING! What’s even more frustrating is that these ingredients are oftentimes “hidden ingredients” so we don’t even know they are there.  It is ridiculous that we’ve had to become a nation of label readers and that we can’t just trust the companies we pay for products to care for our families.

Back to J&J… In 2012 they announced that they were going to be continuing to remove other harmful ingredients in their baby & adult personal care products. Ready for this list of ingredients??

  • Phthalates, which have a variety of health implications. Some of which include hormonal disruption, poor sperm quality, and interference of sex hormones.
  • Fragrance – generally created synthetically with harmful chemicals
  • Triclosan, a very dangerous antibacterial substance
  • Parabens, a type of preservative that can mimic the hormone estrogen, which is known to play a role in the development of breast cancers.

I’ve talked about this before but let me just say it again…

Just because a product is for sale, that does not mean it is safe! I understand that everyone is in different places with what aspects of natural living to take on. Baby steps are a great way to really implement long-term changes. Start reading labels though. Big business is not looking out for you, they are looking out for their wallets. Know what your options are. Understand how products affect your family. Educate yourself and your children.

End of rant. 🙂
