Hemp is thought to be one of the earth’s most nutritious plants. Hemp seeds are an ideal source of protein for vegans and vegetarians, including those who eat a raw diet. Essential fatty acids are abundant in hemp seeds, as are magnesium, iron, potassium, and fiber. Hemp seeds also have a nice supply of vitamin E, which provides antioxidant protection.

Many of you may be aware that there is a stigma surrounding hemp. Let’s discuss this so we have some clarity on the issue before we study further the health benefits of hemp seeds. Though hemp comes from a variety of Cannabis (the plant family that includes marijuana), it contains extremely low levels of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, which is responsible for the “high” from smoking marijuana).  According to the hemp growers industry, industrial hemp grown for food, fuel, and natural fibers contains virtually no THC. The plant is known for being extremely easy to cultivate, with fantastic yields. The market for hemp is worldwide. This should be a farmer’s dream! Unfortunately, the hemp plant, even for culinary and industrial purposes, is still illegal to grow in the United States. There are some instances where it is legal to grow for research purposes, according to recent changes to the Controlled Substances Act. Most organic hemp seeds found on the market in the U.S. are grown in Canada, which has a $ billion/year hemp industry. So, to clarify the issue for you- It is not legal for you to grow hemp in the USA, it is legal for you to buy it, you cannot get “high” by consuming hemp, it is very safe and very healthy. How healthy? Hemp seeds have a mild, nutty flavor and do not have to be ground up before using.  The nutritional content of hemp seeds is highest in the raw state.
